ADULT DAY CARE
Adult Day Care is a facility-based (i.e., out-of-home) program designed to provide socialization, rehabilitation, personal care, and nutrition services to impaired adults and seniors. Check with the agency regarding specific limitations and fees.
ASSISTED LIVING COMMUNITIES
Provides private apartments for individuals who do not need 24-hour supervision but may need support with activities of daily living. Communities are licensed to provide room and board, with staff on duty 24 hour/day, organized activities, intermittent nursing services, medication management, assistance with dressing and personal hygiene. A licensed nurse is available. Most provide group meals, linen service and housekeeping.
CONTINUING CARE
Continuing Care Retirement Communities provide all three levels of care - independent living, assisted living and memory care on a single campus. Residents enter at their point of current need with the option to move toward greater levels of care if needed.
FOSTER HOME
A foster home is a private home that accepts a maximum of five adult residents who require shelter and care. Its purpose is to provide services in a family setting for people who can no longer live in their own homes, but who do not require skilled nursing care. All adult foster homes in Lane County have been licensed by the State of Oregon, Senior & Disabilities Services, Mental Health or the Developmental Disabilities Offices. See levels of care.
  • Level 1 - may admit those residents who need "assistance" with routine care and must only be in stable medical condition.
  • Level 2 - may admit residents who need assistance and who may be "dependent" in up to three areas of their care needs.
  • Level 3 - operated by a nurse or a caregiver with more than three years of experience providing care to persons who are dependent in four or more areas of their care needs.
INDEPENDENT LIVING
Generally defined as any housing arrangement designed exclusively for seniors, generally those aged 55 and over. Housing varies from apartment-style living to freestanding homes. In general, the housing is friendlier to older adults, often being more compact, with easier navigation and assistance in yard maintenance if there is a yard. Various terms are commonly used in reference to independent living: retirement communities, retirement homes, senior housing, senior apartments, etc.
MEMORY CARE/ALZHEIMER'S CARE
This type of care is designed to address the special needs of individuals who have a diagnosis of dementia (the most common form of dementia called Alzheimer's Disease). Alzheimer's Care, also referred to as Memory Care, can be provided in a special unit within a facility or in a free-standing facility. An Alzheimer's or dementia facility provides an environment and care model designed specifically for the unique needs of persons with a dementia illness.
NURSING FACILITY
A Nursing Facility provides 24 hour nursing care and a wide range of personal care. Some nursing facilities may provide skilled care after an injury or hospital stay. Services may include rehabilitation such as physical, occupational, speech, and respiratory therapies. Medicare pays for skilled nursing facility care for a limited period of time if you meet certain conditions. Personal care generally is to assist with support services such as dressing, bathing, and using the bathroom, for people who can't take care of themselves at home or in the community due to physical, emotional, or mental problems. Medicare does not pay for this type of care.
RESIDENTIAL CARE FACILITY
Usually defined as private or semi-private room with on-duty staff 24 hours a day. Provides medication management, meals, housekeeping, laundry services and assistance with eating, dressing, bathing, toileting, transferring, and walking. Facility may be secured 24 hours to accommodate residents who are at risk for wandering.
RESPITE CARE
Usually defined as care provided to a patient for a limited period of time, such as 3-4 days, to provide the regular caregiver a chance to take care of personal business or relax. Always check with facility regarding specific limitations and fees.
